Quality Assurance for Mammography Screening in Halkidiki
Initiated in 1992, as a pilot project addressed to the women of the region to undergo mammography and clinical breast examination on the premises of the Centre "Our Lady Who Loves Mankind" in Ormylia, Halkidiki. All women of the region aged 40-70 years (10,000 women in 1991) received personal invitation to attend this screening programme every 2 years. Health professionals, experts in the field of secondary prevention provided their services in this project. Informative lectures on the risk and preventive strategies of breast cancer were presented to groups of women prior to the mammography examination and interviewer-administered questionnaires were used to collect vital demographic, socio-economic and medical history information. Gradually, the project expanded to inviting women from the neighbouring regions. The screening programme is a model unit of secondary prevention in Greece and a member of the European Network for Quality Assurance in Mammography Screening (European Commission, Public Health Directorate).
