PARTNER

PARTNER: Participatory Approach for Training, Empowerment, and Health Education Resources in Prisons

Prolepsis Institute is partnering in PARTNER, a three-year project funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union. This project aims to bridge the gap in health literacy and education for both People Living in Prisons (PLP) and prison staff, fostering a healthier and more informed prison community.

Why PARTNER?

Health literacy among PLP is significantly lower than in the general population. Research shows that PLP face a higher incidence of mental health conditions and have a greater risk of contracting communicable diseases, such as Hepatitis B and C as well as a range of sexually transmitted infections. Custodial staff and those working with prison services often lack the training and resources needed to effectively address health-related challenges within prison settings.

Recognizing these gaps, the PARTNER project was established to provide both PLP and prison staff with the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to improve health awareness, prevention, and management in correctional facilities. Moreover, within the criminal justice framework, enhancing health education supports PLP’s successful reintegration into society post-release.

Our Approach

PARTNER adopts a participatory, inclusive, and research-driven approach to develop a tailored training program to address the health and health literacy needs of both People Living in Prisons (PLP) and prison staff.

Key Objectives

  • Through collaboration between prison communities, research institutions, and academia, PARTNER will:
  • Provide PLP and prison staff with knowledge and skills to take action over their health and increase their health literacy.
  • Develop a tailored training program that considers the diverse backgrounds and learning needs of PLP, ensuring inclusivity in education.
  • Promote a culture of continuous learning within prisons.
  • Foster collaboration between prison communities, research institutions, and academia, to co-create a comprehensive and tailored training program.
  • Enhance partner organisation’s capabilities to develop and deliver relevant training.
