The Institute of Preventive Medicine, Environmental and Occupational Health, Prolepsis, as part of its continuing effort to protect the health of citizens and safeguard Public Health, is striving to provide reliable and responsible information regarding the new Influenza A(H1N1).

Therefore, it is organizing a series of educational events during which Institute specialists inform the public about preventive measures against H1N1.

The first of these series of events was held on October 19th, 2009 at the Conference Center of the Municipality of Nea Ionia. Dr. Eleni Patrozou, Infectious Diseases Specialist and scientific collaborator of the Institute, addressed about 50 parents and guardians of pre-school children in the area, bringing them up to date concerning the new influenza virus and the protective measures needed, especially the ones referring to young children.

The next event, which was organized with the initiative of the Holy Metropolis of Dimitriada and Almyros, took place on November 12th 2009 in Volos with Dr. Elpida Frantzeskou as the main speaker. The event was attended by about 80 ladies who volunteer in the houses of the parish of Galini Christou (Christ's Tranquility) of the Holy Metropolis. During her speech Dr. Frantzeskou, who is a doctor in training and collaborator of the Institute, referred to the new influenza symptoms and emphasized on the precaution measures against it. The event was welcomed by His Eminence the Metropolitan of Dimitriada and Almyros, Father Ignatius, who stated that the purpose of the speech is to provide accurate and legitimate information to the public regarding the new Influenza A (H1N1).

Continuing the Institute's campaign on informing the public, Dr. Eleni Patrozou spoke at the Hellenic American Union's Theatre on the 24th of November 2009. The speech was organized by the Hellenic American Union in collaboration with the Hellenic-American Medical Society, and was attended by a large audience including scholars from the medical field. Dr. Patrozou presented all of the latest news on the H1N1 pandemic and offered answers to the many questions posed by the audience.

A few days later, on December 1st 2009, Dr. Patrozou addressed the 2nd Lyceum (High School) of Holargos. The speech was attended by about 120 students of the Junior and Senior classes of the school and their teachers. Dr. Patrozou particularly emphasized the necessary protection measures that need to be taken both individually and collectively to prevent further spread of the virus, especially since schools are an environment that facilitates the pandemic.

The campaign initiated by the Institute and its staff will continue with more informational events planned for 2010.
