Prolepsis in Migrant Health Conference in Europe
Participants from more than 20 countries and organizations, including Prolepsis, presented their data and discussed the current status of health care system in European countries and the new challenges that health care professionals and policymakers are confronted with as a consequence of increased migration. Prolepsis, represented by its President, Prof. Athena Linos, led a workshop entitled "Education and Training on Migrant and Refugee Health in the European Union". The workshop focused on the education and training of public health professionals on migrant and refugee issues as a factor that affects the quality of the health care system provided to ethnic diverse populations. The aim was to stimulate discussion about the effectiveness of the European official educational system regarding issues of migrant and refugee health through the presentation of the basic research results of the Leonardo da Vinci Project, called CIVOT (Content of Initial and Vocational Training in Public Health in European Member States) to which Prolepsis has largely contributed. The results revealed the lack of undergraduate and postgraduate courses related to migrant health and the limited existence of further training on migrant issues in the European Union. Through other presentations, emphasis was given on the effort to analyze ethnic differences in health, to explain different mortality rates in European countries and to present the quality and effectiveness of health care provided by the recipient country to immigrants and refugees. The Conference succeeded in stressing the need to enhance the knowledge on the topic of health and migration in Europe and can be considered as a starting point for further research and cooperation among participating institutions. |
