Editorial: “hυgeίa@εργασiα & παχυσαρκία”
Obesity and its consequences was the subject of Prof Linos’ editorial hosted by the journal hυgeίa@εργασiα, issue 3 (September-December 2010). The magazine is the scientific edition of the Hellenic Society of Occupational and Environmental Medicine in association with the Program of Postgraduate Studies Health and Safety in Workplaces.
Prof Linos, based on official statistical evidence, states that obesity is an epidemic, considered as one of the major public health problems of our day. Moreover, she underlines the consequences of obesity on health as well as on the economy on national and European level.
She continues explaining the role that working conditions have in the prevalence of obesity and presenting the basic obesogenic factors which pertain to the workplace environment.
Finally, Prof Linos refers to the guidelines developed by the Institute of Preventive Medicine Environmental and Occupational Health, Prolepsis, as part of the European project “Guidelines for the prevention of obesity at the workplace-GPOW” and indicatively proposes methods for adopting counter obesity strategies at different workplace settings.
