School nutrition program
- Food Aid and Promotion of Healthy Nutrition Program – DIATROFI
It is one of the largest humanitarian actions of the last decade, a period during which Greece has been suffering from one of the most long-lasting financial crises faced in the post-war period. The Program’s objective is to fight food insecurity and hunger of students attending schools in socioeconomically vulnerable areas, as well as to help students and their families adopt healthy nutrition habits. The Program has been implemented since 2012, with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation as its founding donor, and the collaboration of many more institutes, businesses, and the contribution by our fellow citizens. The Program daily provides one healthy meal to all the children of every participating school, which has been selected based on socioeconomic criteria. At the same time, both students and their families are encouraged to adopt healthy nutrition habits through educational activities and events combined with a specially designed educational material.
To date, a total of 941 schools, attended by 198,580 students from all over Greece have participated, while over 18,700,000 meals have been provided.
