Advocacy in Health Inequality issues

    • Inequality mitigation in the health sector

Prolepsis Institute is a partner to the DRIVERS for Health Equity Program which proposed action and policy initiatives to the European Parliament aiming to minimize the health inequality gap. Within the program’s implementation framework, good practice and advocacy actions have been studied and evaluated, such as the Program DIATROFI on Food Aid and Promotion of Healthy Nutrition. The DIATROFI Program has contributed in decreasing health inequality in Greece. Following the example of the Program, the State has  adopted a similar initiative of providing food aid in Greek public schools. • Improving digital health literacy for the elder European population

Due to the lack of sufficient digital education and access to various technological platforms, elderly citizens, even those coming from developed European countries, perform poorly in adopting and taking advantage of the benefits that modern technology has to offer, thus resulting in a low digital literacy level.

Prolepsis is a partner in a European project titled “iHeal” through which it aims at improving digital literacy among elder people, especially the age group over 50 years old. The aim of the program is to minimize marginalization and social exclusion of the elderly and to ensure equity in health and wellbeing . For more information on the iHEAL project, click here.

    • Reducing health inequalities by improving physical and mental health services for refugees and migrants

Millions of people around the world do not have access to primary health services. Most of them, due to financial difficulties are forced to choose between healthcare and everyday necessities such as food, clothing and even housing. In particular, people who have been forced to leave their country due to war or poverty are often confronted with far greater barriers to access those services.

Prolepsis Institute supports the fundamental right of all people to health and defends their right to obtain equal access to health services as a prerequisite for achieving social justice and inclusion. As leading partner of the European project Mig-HealthCare: “Strengthen Community Based Care to minimize health inequalities and improve the integration of vulnerable migrants and refugees into local communities”, Prolepsis Institute takes part in the effort to decrease social inequalities in the health sector by improving physical and mental health services for refugees and migrants. Additional information regarding the European program Mig-HealthCare can be found here.

    • Improving cooperation in the health sector by involving other social service providers

“Catchy” health campaigns do not seem to be effective in encouraging people to adopt a healthier lifestyle. It is thus considered imperative for public health professionals to cooperate more closely with other sectors in order to improve the conditions that shape public health.

Within the framework of Crossing Bridges,  a European project in which Prolepsis Institute participated as a partner representing Greece, a number of proposals have been made with the aim to strengthen and improve collaboration between healthcare services and other social services in designing and implementing policies. Improving the effectiveness of policies and actions for citizens’ health and well-being is the aim of this project. Training workshops were held in all participating countries for public health professionals on “Achieving a Win-Win for health and health equity”. Further information on Crossing Bridges is available here.
