Program duration: 01/09/2022 – 31/08/2025
Cook2DIAbeat is a 36-month project funded by the ERASMUS+ Programme of the European Union, with the aim to develop a novel educational program for all patients with type 2 diabetes to achieve lifelong dietary changes that will help them manage their disease.
Type-2 diabetes rose globally in 2019 to 5th cause of death from the 10th position in 1990. Diabetes stands among the top ten drivers of increasing burden over this 30-year period. According to International Diabetes Federation, 59 million adults are living with diabetes in IDF European region and a 15% increase is estimated by 2045. According to Diabetes Atlas, the global direct health care costs of diabetes and its related complications is estimated to increase from 795-1404 billion dollars in 2015 to 997-1788 billion dollars in 2040.
A person with diabetes has higher risk of death and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) compared to general population. This excess risk could be almost eliminated controlling the main CVD risk factors. Several studies have shown that intervention based on lifestyle modifications may have a substantial risk reduction associated with diabetes. Towards this, Cook2DΙΑbeat aims to find a synergy between Nutrition, Medicine and Gastronomy designing an innovative training curriculum for the benefit of patients with diabetes. The kitchen is the place where this synergy can happen.
Using the aforementioned approach, the Cook2DIAbeat project will address the following needs:
- Enhance capacity and key competences of patients with diabetes to achieve successful self-management of their disease;
- Provide patients with diabetes with knowledge and skills to achieve sustainable dietary changes;
- Provide a nutrition education program tailor made for patients with diabetes adapted to any socioeconomic or educational status;
- Adapt a nutrition education program for diabetes management to the current diet-related reality;
- Enhance person-centered care in diabetes that actively involves the patient in the care process as an equal partner in, and expert on, living with a chronic condition through ICT;
- Support Health Care Providers, Policy Makers and relevant stakeholders in diabetes care.
